Chapter 45, Swallow
“You know me, that means you know my name? And how old am I? And where do I come from?” Neko asked excitedly.
Vivi looked at him with a solemn expression. “You child, are 17 years old. You come from the capital, Branclough. As for your name, I sadly don’t know it, as a baby you were called Nekonata.”
“My name is Nekonata?” He asked, confused, as he said it the name didn’t feel right, it didn’t roll off his tongue, it tasted bitter, he didn’t like it. “I don’t like it, it’s not my name, not my true name is it?”
“Neko, listen to me,” Vivi said softly, “Your memory will come back to you, in time, try to be a little patient.” He said putting his hands on the boy's shoulders reassuringly, “Now why don’t you introduce me to your friends?”
Nekonata smiled, “This is Santaya and Kristolia, their parents were sadly killed protecting them from a bear when they were cubs, and this is Kimbo.”
“These are some fine wolves you have, very strong, very loyal, with eagerness to prove themselves.” Vivi knelt on the floor and stroked the wolves. “Your horse, you got him from Colkeeth?” Nekonata nodded. “I am surprised this horse was in Colkeeth at all.”
“The original owner couldn’t tame her, she was very stubborn for him. I did but I don’t know how, I said something, but it wasn’t normal, and somehow she understood me, and now we are friends.” Neko explained.
Vivi looked to his left and saw a Swallow sitting in the tree waiting for him. Vivi smiled again and raised his arm. The Swallow flew over landing on his hand. “This is Meera the Swallow Nekonata. She is a shapeshifter, and a messenger for me.”
Neko’s eyes flashed purple, he staggered feeling dizzy. ‘He was standing by a tree, talking to a bird, to swallow. “I left a gift for you on your desk in your room, happy birthday.” Everything went blurry for a moment then he was holding a silver necklace with a swallow pendant, Again everything went blurry and the next thing he knew he was cowering in fear, in the corner of a bed. “It’s ok, my name is Meera, don’t you remember me?” There was a flash of purple and the woman was hurled across the room crashing into a wardrobe…’
When he came back too, the swallow was no longer a swallow, she was human, wearing a robe, her long brown hair pulled loosely to one side, he was sitting on the floor dripping in sweat. “Y-you… y-you are… Meera?” He stuttered subconsciously, gripping the necklace around his neck.
“Yes, I’m Meera, I gave you that necklace for your 13th birthday.” She said calmly in her soft voice. “Are you ok?”
Breathing slowly, Neko reached up and gently touched her face, “I… I remember you…” He gingerly pulled his hand back, and looked down at the pendant in his hand, “I’m sorry I hurt you…”
Meera smiled, grabbing his hands and pulling him back to his feet with a little help from Vivi, the wolves licked his hands either side of him, and he patted them both on their heads.
“I remember Meera the Swallow… that’s… that’s good isn’t it?” He looked directly at Vivi.
“Yes, it’s good, intriguing you remember her, but it’s good.”
Nekonata noticed a woman with orange hair walking towards Vivi, turning following Nekonata' gaze.
“This is Tarasque's mother Cassandra.”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you,” Nekonata said, shaking her hand gently.
“It’s an honour to meet you, Sir, I must apologise for my rudeness.” Cristina turned to Vivi, “It's Tarasque, something is happening, she has started speaking in her sleep.”
“Let’s go, at once.” Vivi started walking. “Michael, take the horses to my stables.”
A young lad quickly walked forward taking hold of the reins. Nekonata patted Kimbo on the neck and quickly turned to follow Vivi, as always the girls were following at his side. Vivi looked very concerned as he rushed through Edena to get to Tarasque.
“What happened to Tarasque? Who is she?”
“Tarasque came to us two months after you left, her mother brought her here on a horse-drawn cart. She had a full fever and had frequent shaking fits. I did the best I could, I reduced her temperature and managed to stop the fits, but I could not get her out of this coma. I am at a loss, I've tried to enter her consciousness but failed and I don't understand why.”
Vivi had taken them to the church and then walked down the side and went through a side door. They followed a long corridor lit by flame lamps. Moments later they had entered the nurse’s quarters. They walked down to the end of the long corridor and entered a room that was elaborately designed. It was a room fit for a queen. On a cot of straw lay a young girl with orange hair, her skin as white as snow. On her left arm, there was what looked like a dragon drawn on to her, coiled around her left wrist. Nekonata moved closer, it was the girl from his dream!
“I… I saw her!” Neko said, shocked. Vivi and Cassandra looking at him confused. “I saw her in a dream, she asked me to help her! How… how is that possible?”
She started muttering and Vivi pushed him to the side, he leaned in close to try to hear what she was saying.
“I can't make it out.” Vivi leaned in even closer. “Luno? Luno what?”
Nekonata leaned in closer, trying to help. The drawn dragon on her arm moved, Nekonata jumped back startled. Nekonata started to feel very strange. His eyes started to glow purple. He noticed Tarasque was glowing, there was a silver black glow emanating from her. He looked at Vivi and noticed he was glowing orange.
“What is happening? Why are you glowing orange?”
“What did you just say? I'm glowing orange?” Nekonata nodded. Vivi looked at Tarasque and then grabbed Nekonata's hand, dragging him forward and putting his hand on Tarasque's head. There was a snarling sound that seemed to come from the drawn dragon.
“What can you see?” Vivi demanded, “Pay attention to everything you feel, tell me exactly what you see!”
