Chapter 24: Big!
“Tarasque, you need to focus! Mastering elemental magic is important, it could be the difference needed in a battle”
“Dyffros, this whole thing is new to me! Dragon’s magic, even Elves, is new to me! Give me a break!”
‘Tara, he is tasking you hard on purpose, try not to rise to him.’
‘Freaking taskmaster elf, eurgh!’ Tara screamed in frustration in her mind to Eliqana.
“FAJRO!” Tara screamed letting all her pent up frustration leak into the incantation, a large blistering white orb of fire appeared on her palm, get bigger and bigger until it was almost as large as the plate Elqiana ate from.
“Woah, Tara, careful now, please calm down!” Dyffros called out! “Too much of a spell could kill you! Withdraw your incantation now, please!”
Elqiana swarmed Tara’s mind with calmness, ‘Breath my friend, and withdraw…’ Slowly Tara started to calm down by controlling her breathing, the white blistering orb of fire got smaller and smaller, then with the last ounce of her frustration she threw it at the floor by Dyffros’ feet. The elf calmly stepped back.
Tara turned on her heels and stormed back inside the barn. Dyffros made to follow but with one of her large paws Elqiana stopped the elf in his tracks and subtly shook her head. Dyffross dared not argue with her. Instead he sat on the floor right where he was.
Tara’s mother had watched from a distance, liking to keep an eye on her daughter just for her own piece of mind to know she was safe.
‘Your mother was watching.’ Elqiana said softly.
“I know, it’s her way of knowing I’m ok, even though she knows deep down that I am.”
‘Dyffros is going to test you, it’s exactly what he’s here for, and he’s reporting back every day he is here’
Tara looked at her friend with curiosity, “How do you know, he’s reporting back?”
‘I’ve seen him talking to swallows and sometimes little birds that hum, strange and colourful they are’
“Birds that hum, that would be Hummingbirds. Beautiful little birds they are.”
“Pssst, I tried to sneak in to see you Tara, I’ve been told not to disturb your training” Her mother whispered, hugging her.
“He already knows, Dyffros has keen hearing, plus we saw you watching from the distance, you’d have been better hiding in the tall grass rather than using lettuce leaves to cover your face.”
Her mother blushed, and then shushed Tara with a sheepish smile.”Why are you frustrated?”
“He wants me to learn elemental magic, it’s a basic necessity for a Rider he says.”
“And what was the weird white orb that appeared in your hand?”
‘White fire,’ Elqiana said in their minds.
Tara looked up, “I summoned fire? Why didn’t you tell me? Oh my… I did magic!”
Dyffross walked forward, keeping a polite distance from Elqiana. “I was trying to tell you, but Elqiana wouldn’t let me approach.” Dyffros sighs and looks at Tara’s mother “If you believe the presence of your mother will help you focus, then she is welcome to stay.”
Tara stood up, brushed the straw off her legs, and thought about it for a second. “No, it’s ok, Elqiana is right, this is something I need to do. I can do this. I’m sorry for losing my temper Master Dyffros.” Tara stood up straight, with two fingers on her hand she brought them to her lips down in a small arch to her chin, then another arch from her chin to her chest, giving the elf a sign of her respect. Dyffros repeated the gesture in kind himself.
The next few days went by smoothly, Tara getting well equipped to the basic manipulations of elemental magic, so much so that the elf decided to move on to the steps of training and took it upon himself to carved two wooden training swords.
“We need to start travelling, while travelling Elqiana will have to fly high above so not to be seen, it would be dangerous to be seen right now, neither of you are ready. We won’t be able to practice magic as much, that being you said you need to learn how to fight. We will practice with these training swords, until we can find you a decent enough blade.”
Tara nodded her head. With a deep sigh, “Ok, I understand. You are taking us to whoever Gabija is?”
“Gabija… is the Queen of the Elves, the Chief of clan Panther.” Dyffros said very matter of factly, his eyes full of pride. “Yes, to her I will take you to the Elven capital Caa Alora.”
Tara’s mother gasped, “Oh Tara! The Elven Queen! You must remember your manners, young lady!” She cupped her daughter's face in her hands.
“Eurgh mother, stop fussing, please!”
The next day, they set off on the most important journey of Tarasque and Elqiana’s life with Dyffros leading the way. The townsfolk crowded around cheering and giving the travellers a big send off. Elqiana took a few steps ahead, flapping her huge opal white velvet like wings took off into the sky, circling getting ever higher and higher. Dyffros and Tara mounted their horses they’d borrowed, after Dyffros reassured them they'd be sent back safe and sound once they got to their destination.
“Don’t look back, Tara my love, be brave.” Tara gave her mother one last hug, and finally set off with Dyffros.
“Saying goodbye is harder than I thought it would be.” Tara muttered.
“It’s never really a goodbye, for home is where the heart is.” Dyffros said softly.
