Chapter 23: Contortion

By now, Neko had settled into routine, he did calligraphy in the morning after breakfast, then his stretches and exercises, after lunch he practiced his swordsmanship and bowmanship skills, then after dinner he’d practice his magic, and element contortion skills. He was succeeding in everything, his rate of learning faster than expected. Vivi had even asked some of the high elf guards to come forward as a challenge, and they were no match for Neko.

Surprisingly, or at least in Vivi’s eyes the only person that came close to beating Neko was actually Elvina, until Neko somehow turned the odds in a strange way.

In the heat of their training duel, Elvina summoned her ruby red water soaking Neko to his but the boy just laughed “Thanks for the cool down Elvina!” It was then that Neko summoned his purple fire, but turned it on himself, drying him but also creating a purple smokescreen at the same time, which served to act as a cover to hide him as he quickly maneuvered forward under the cover of the smoke and gently place the whispering wind on Elvina’s shoulder by her neck.

Elvina knew right away the second she felt the blade touch her skin that she’d lost. The crowd waited in anticipation, and saw for themselves moments later as the purple smoke dissipated, and erupted in a cheer of applause.

Elvina sheathed her Ruby Sword, as Neko sheathed Whispering Wind and they bowed to each other.

“Wow, well done Neko, that was ingenious!” Elvina exclaimed. “I’d never have thought to do that myself

“Thank you Master Elvina, and thank you for the training duel, I really enjoyed it!”

Vivi stepped forward clapping. “That will go down as one of the greatest training duels, to be written and blessed in the Great Hall of the Elves!”

Neko beamed with happiness, knowing that this was great praise from Vivi.

“I have something else to show you Master Vivi, if I may?”

Vivi looked at the boy curiously, “Please my boy, go ahead.”

Neko opened up the palm of his hand, “Fajro!” A small ball of purple fire appeared, its contortion changed from a ball to a square, then to a triangle.

“Excellent Nekonata!” But Elvina gently placed a hand on her fathers arm hinting for him to wait a moment.

The purple fire triangle changed into the shape of a rose, a purple fire rose. Then it changed from a rose into the shape of a squirrel. Timtur watched from the edge of the training area, his eyebrows raised. “A purple fire squirrel…” He muttered.

Neko glanced at Timtur, then at Vivi, and he winked. He had the purple fire squirrel jump from his hand and run towards Timtur. Timtur put his arms up as if to protect himself, but the purple fire squirrel ran up his leg, up his back and rested on his shoulder.

“It’s not burning me, why am I not being burned?” Timtur called out confused.

Vivi was very surprised. “You’ve learned this so fast… how?”

Suddenly the squirrel climbed onto Timtur’s head and jumped high, in mid air the purple fire squirrel contorted into a bird, a swallow, it flew around Meera’s head before flying around Vivi and Elvina’s and then finally disappeared in a small poof of purple smoke.

“The purple fire swallow looked better than the purple fire squirrel!” Meera chirped nudging Timtur in his arm.

“Elvina, did you help him? Vivi asked, but Elvina shook her head.

“No father, he learned this all by himself, I’ve seen him practicing for hours into the night.”

Vivi looked over everyone’s heads into the distance. “There isn’t much else I can teach you in the regards of what you’ve been taught. There is so much more you need to know, but now is not the time.

“I can tell you what there is time for though. The Coming of Age celebrations. Neko is about to turn 13 is he not?” Said Elvina excitedly.
Vivi clapped his hands together, “Yes, of course. Nekonata turns 13 tomorrow night! It’s time to start the preparations!”

The people of Edena cheered once again and then started to bustle around to get the preparations started.

“Master Vivi… please could you tell me mothers name, if I’m to come of age then that means I’m a man, could I at least know her name, if I’m to know nothing else I’d like to know that, please”

Vivi placed his hands on the now young man's shoulders and looked deep into his eyes.

“You’re mothers name was… Julia.”
